What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is a holistic medical system that roots from the Taoist philosophy of change, growth and harmony with strong emphasis on mind and body connection.
The development of TCM began more than 5,000 years ago in a culture with a unique view of the world which forbade human dissection. Ancient practitioners had to rely on their powers of observation for trial and error to develop a medical system. As a result, they had a different understanding of the body and disease than we do in the Western society. After centuries of assessment and evaluation, TCM has withstood the test of time. It is still used in China and is practised alongside Western medicine in many hospitals.
In the West, TCM is still considered as an alternative medicine. However, in last few decades Western science has proven that TCM with all its ancient healing arts such an acupuncture, herbs, Tui Na massage, cupping or guasha has its efficiency in the treatment of various conditions, including headaches, lower back pain, addictions, infertility, lessen the side effects from cancer treatment etc. Acupuncture can be good for patients without potentially serious side effects of potent (synthetic) drugs, so it’s worth considering even if the underlying mechanisms are unclear.
At the heart of Chinese medicine lies a preventative, holistic approach to health.
To prevent conditions from arising, we are encouraged to adopt a lifestyle and activities that are supporting good health.
Conditions Commonly Treated with Acupuncture
Acupuncture can treat a vast variety of different illnesses. Although acupuncture practitioners know that acupuncture can treat a huge number of conditions, research is still ‘proving’ its effect. A report of World Health Organization (WHO) did list 28 conditions that acupuncture has been proved to treat effectively. Acupuncture treatment can be beneficial for a whole range of problems.
ACHES OR PAIN
Musculoskeletal conditions acute or chronic
SEVERE CHRONIC ILLNESS
Support for long-term illness – cancer-ill patients, diabetes, fibromyalgia

Additionally, Acupuncture can be used for preventative treatment in order to remain healthy and prevent illness, as well as enhance health after going through a course of treatment. The British Acupuncture Council website provides comprehensive information on the benefits for different health conditions.
